There are several methods of treatment recommended by doctors, depending on the particularities of each case: igienopostural treatment, drug therapy, physical and spa, it follows the control muscle contraction, pain relief, prevent relapses and complications
1.The ideal rest is a hard bed, lying on one side with knees bent (observing time prescribed by your doctor)
It has been demonstrated experimentally that only in this way the column will be able to relax and allow healing column vertebral disc. Standing or sitting are causing pressure to the disc, which will be damaged further.
2. Lumbar muscle contracture (lumbago) that lasts from several days to 2-3 weeks, will deal with medical or warm bath of light, heat will be used rationally: electric pillow or buiotele, mattress will be warm before the patient will lie down in bed, avoiding overheating direct the lumbar muscles.
3. Pain is a symptom of major discomfort for a patient with sciatica . This is progressively reducing while the disc is healing and the muscle contraction is decreasing. If only the pain is treated, without controlling the stress of the muscle contracture of the spine, does not assure disc’s healing and exposes the patient to serious relapse, which may cause surgical cases.
Pain announces that the disc has not restored its function. In cases of simple evolution, this gives off progressively.
Evolution of the patient may be different:
- 10-14 days after, the patient has no muscle contractions; he can bend his torso, but accuses some subjective sensations (burning or cooling), numbness, pain, etc… These sensations disappear in several weeks; until the nerve is recovering while the compression dissapear, spa treatment and physiotherapy will help them routinely.
- If the pain is bigger during treatment and difficulties in walking appear together with suddenly impossibility to move foot or thumb-it may be a sign of a herniated disc appearance when a chirurgical intervention is needed. Any delay in such an action can lead to a form of paralyzing.
The patient suffering of sciatica can live a normal life, without surgery intervention, if he respects the treatment regime prescribed by the doctor. These are some rules which should be followed:
-Lifting will be done with knees bent and column as straight as possible;
- Practicing daily, medical gymnastics, 10-15 minutes
-Avoid fattening (every kilogram extra pushes sometimes tens of kilograms forces per damaged disc and also on nerve roots).
-Emergency notification of the doctor in case of occurrence of back pain.
Physical therapy plays an important role in determining postural therapy (walking, at work and home), it follows a general relaxation, iminution of lower back contracture and muscle strenthening to prevent further painful crises.
